Digital Security Training Report: Three-Day Workshop in Dar es Salaam
- Introduction
Over the course of three days from January 8 – 10, 2025 in Dar es Salaam, a digital security training workshop was organized by Zaina Foundation for 20 dedicated digital rights coalition members. The participants included journalists, lawyers, and women human rights defenders who are actively engaged in promoting digital rights and ensuring online safety. The training was designed to provide them with the essential skills and knowledge and tools practice to protect themselves and the communities they serve against online threats. The focus was on practical techniques, easy-to-follow procedures, and strategies to safeguard digital information. This report provides an overview of the training sessions, the key topics covered, and the outcomes of the event.
- Proceedings of the Workshop
The workshop began with an introductory session that set the stage for the training on risk assessment. Participants were welcomed by the organizers, who stressed the importance of digital security in today’s fast-changing online environment. The opening remarks emphasized that digital security is not only a technical matter but also a human rights issue. As such, journalists, lawyers, and human rights defenders must be well equipped to handle online risks such as hacking, data breaches, and cyber harassment. The session laid the groundwork by explaining basic concepts of digital security, including safe browsing practices, the use of strong passwords, and the importance of keeping software updated.
